A History of Speed: The Beginning of Racing

Friday, December 12th, 2008

As with everything worthwhile, one can learn a lot about the modern incarnation by looking at history. With auto racing, the situation is the same. From Cherry Hill to Paris, automotive racing has been a part of the fabric of our times and has introduced the idea of competition between two or more machines with style and substance all its own.

Auto racing pretty much began with the introduction of petro-fuelled automobiles. Prior to automobiles, individuals raced in horse-drawn carts, buggies, on horseback, on foot, and on or in any other type of vehicle from boats to sleds. Racing, the idea of seeing who would finish “first,” was one of the earliest indicators of competition. In many ways, all sporting events are based around the concept of a race and finishing in first place. Racing, it could be said, is a natural part of our humanity.

As racing evolved to include automobiles, races were organized. The first race ever organized, by the chief editor of Paris publication Le Vélocipède, Monsieur Fossier, was on April 28 1887 and ran from Neuilly Bridge to the Bois de Boulogne. The winner of the race was Georges Bouton by default, as he was the only racer to show up. Still, the hype and pomp of the event soon sparked others and the sport evolved into what we know it as today.

Whether NASCAR or ARCA Racing, there is a rich history behind the roar of the engines well worth exploring.

Tim Cindric to be Guest of Honor at Awards Banquet

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

President of Penske Racing Tim Cindric will be the guest of honor at the ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship Awards Banquet at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Kentucky, on Saturday evening, December 6th. The ARCA RE/MAX Series has had a long relationship with Penske Racing, dating back to when ARCA began racing at the Michigan International Speedway in the 1980s.

The Michigan International Speedway was owned by Penske at the time. The popular ABC plan was also a part of the relationship. The ABC plan involved the use of ARCA, Busch and Cup Series races to train development drivers and teams for full-time racing careers.

Recently, Penske Racing has started up a driver development program through ARCA RE/MAX Series team Cunningham Motorsports. Penske has also signed 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion Justin Allgaier to drive the No. 12 Dodge in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2009, adding more weapons to the arsenal and giving the team a real chance to win in the coming racing season.

The awards banquet will take place at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Kentucky. As the guest of honor, Cindric will be honored for his contributions to ARCA Racing and the racing world in general. It should be an exciting and emotional evening for all involved.

Final ARCA Race of 2008 Proves Interesting

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Mike Brudenell, a writer for the Detroit Free Press, attended the final ARCA Racing event of 2008 at the home of the series – the Toledo Speedway.

According to Brudenell, it was a rather weird event in many ways. The first thing that struck him as being out of the ordinary was the weather on the day of the event. Around mid-October in northern Ohio, it’s usually much colder than it was on Sunday. People were sipping cold drinks during the race when they would normally have been looking for some coffee or hot chocolate.

But that wasn’t the end of the unusual events. By the time the event was over, Scott Speed was in an ambulance being raced to the hospital after getting in a collision with Stenhouse. It all happened so fast that Brudenell, along with other spectators, didn’t even see him get loaded in the emergency vehicle. In fact, they thought he disappeared somewhere until ARCA spokesperson announced that he was in the ambulance.

“I’ve never seen anything like this – at Toledo or any ARCA race,” said one ARCA official that was sitting near Brudenell.

As it turns out, the final event on the ARCA circuit was one of the most interesting and exciting races of the year. We can only look forward to what next year has in store for the fans.
